Micromanagement is NOT necessary
We all have been, at one point or another, confronted to a manager,supervisor,client, or even colleague, that micromanaged our work. The micromanager has this urge to overshadow your every move all the time. They thouroughly go into every corner of your task and have this manner of picking on unnecessary details to obtain a justification from you.
Well, this my theory as to why certain people micromanage:

They do not trust you – So why did they hire you in the first place?

They want to control you – You are good and they know it. You may be too good!

They want to learn from you – They are very eager to learn what you know and take micromanagement as a private lesson to suck your knowledge out

They are insecure – And want to make sure noone else knows that YOU are doing their work (well, usually, they take the credit for success and blame you for mistakes)
-
Some very seldom times…Micromanagement is, alas, necessary.
Sometimes, it it all of the above and when you are lucky, it will one at a time
If you are a micromanager, I would love to hear from you and begin a discussion as to why you deem it necessary. And, if you have been micromanaged, let it all out and make sure, you will find support here.
In the meantime, micromanagers, be assure that micromanaging is Not necessary, most of the time. It can cause serious personal and professional heartbreaks as one can feel unworthy.

I know im a little late to the game for this post, but thought i’d just leave my quick thoughts, as micro-management is one my pet peeves, and something that I believe kills efficiency and productivity when used incorrectly. The other side of the micro- coin is the micro-employee. Sometimes you have an employee who emails you with any little development or question, even if they don’t need to be micromanaged. My favorite anti-micromanaging tactic for this situation is to limit the employee to one email per day to you, as the manager. So far, it’s worked amazingly well, as they have to make sure they really need to email you before they take up your time and attention.

I think you hit the nail on the head with that list of reasons folk micromanage. I like to think that people want to micromanage me to either learn from me or because my awesomeness intimidates them. Regardless of the reason, however, I find it stifling. I am more a fan of supportive and directive back up. If a make a mistake, I’ll own it, just let me learn from it, too.

Micromanagement should be reserved for those who are clueless in performing their jobs not for people who are true professionals in their field. I’ve had to micromanage staff once in my career which I wasn’t pleased about because I believe in letting people perform the work they have been hired for. I’m there to lead, provide support, and mentor.
